10 x Allium gigantheum

Allium giganteum, commonly called giant ornamental onion, brings bold vertical interest to garden beds and borders. Its tall stems topped with large, round purple flower heads create a strong architectural look and work especially well among perennials, ornamental grasses, and other spring and early-summer bloomers.

The sturdy stems and distinctive flower heads also make Allium giganteum a popular choice for cut-flower arrangements. Once the flowers fade, the rounded seed heads can continue to provide structure and visual interest in the garden. The nectar-rich blooms are also attractive to bees and other pollinating insects.

Watering and Care

Water regularly, especially during dry spells, and keep the soil lightly moist without overwatering. Excess moisture can cause bulb rot.

Maintenance

Remove dead leaves and spent flower stems regularly to keep the plant looking tidy. Cutting back faded flowers helps the plant put its energy into healthy growth.

Location

Plant in full sun and choose well-draining soil. Allium giganteum performs best where the bulbs do not stay wet.

Tip

Plant alongside other perennials for a varied border. The tall purple flower heads make a striking garden display.
