Hollyhock

Alcea ficifolia, commonly known as the fig-leaved hollyhock, brings classic cottage garden charm with its tall flower spikes and distinctive fig-shaped foliage. Throughout summer, colourful blossoms appear in abundance, attracting butterflies and bees while creating a lively display in sunny borders. It grows best in fertile, well-drained soil where it develops into a strong and reliable perennial. Thanks to its impressive height, it is particularly effective as a backdrop for mixed borders or along fences and walls.

Care/Water

Alcea ficifolia requires regular watering during the growing season, especially during dry periods. Keep the soil consistently moist but avoid waterlogging to prevent root problems. Water in the morning or evening for optimal care.

Maintenance

Regularly remove faded flowers and dead plant parts to encourage growth and keep the plant healthy. Trim weak shoots to extend flowering. Light spring fertilization supports strong stems and long-lasting blooms.

Location

Prefers sunny to partially shaded locations with well-draining soil. Ideal for flower beds, borders, and cottage gardens where it adds color and height.
