Rugged hollyhock

Alcea rugosa is a hardy wild hollyhock that produces large pale yellow flowers, bringing a natural and graceful appearance to cottage gardens and wildlife-friendly landscapes. Its tall flowering stems create impressive vertical accents while attracting bees and other pollinating insects throughout the blooming season. Best grown in full sun with well-drained soil, this resilient perennial establishes easily and returns reliably year after year. Its understated beauty makes it an excellent choice for naturalistic borders and expansive perennial plantings.

Care/Water

Alcea rugosa requires regular watering throughout the growing season. Keep the soil lightly moist but avoid waterlogging, which can damage roots. Water in the morning or evening, especially during dry periods, to minimize evaporation.

Maintenance

Regularly remove dried flowers and leaves. Trim damaged or weak shoots to maintain a healthy, compact plant. Light spring fertilization promotes strong stems and abundant flowering.

Location

Prefers sunny to partially shaded locations with well-draining, nutrient-rich soil. Ideal for flower beds, borders, and cottage gardens, adding height and structure with its flowers.
