Ornamental onion

Allium senescens is valued for its soft pinkish-purple flower heads and elegant, slightly twisted foliage that adds texture to sunny garden borders. Unlike many ornamental onions, it begins flowering in midsummer and continues into early autumn, extending the season with fresh colour when many perennials have already finished blooming. It thrives in well-drained soil and attracts numerous bees and butterflies with its nectar-rich flowers. Compact growth and excellent hardiness make it ideal for rock gardens and natural planting combinations.

Care/Water

Allium senescens requires regular watering during the growing season, especially during dry periods. Keep the soil lightly moist but avoid waterlogging to prevent root rot. Water preferably in the morning or evening to minimize evaporation.

Maintenance

Regularly remove faded flowers and old leaves. Trim weak or damaged shoots to maintain a compact, healthy plant. Light spring fertilization supports strong stems and abundant blooms.

Location

Prefers sunny to partially shaded locations with well-draining, humus-rich soil. Ideal for borders, rock gardens, and flower beds, providing height, structure, and decorative blooms.
