Marshmallow

Althaea officinalis, commonly known as marshmallow, is a traditional perennial recognised for its soft pink flowers and velvety foliage that bring natural charm to cottage gardens and wildlife-friendly borders. It flourishes in fertile, moisture-retentive soil under sunny or lightly shaded conditions, where it flowers generously throughout the season. Bees and other pollinating insects are frequent visitors to its delicate blooms. Alongside its ornamental qualities, this historic plant is also well known for its long-standing medicinal heritage.

Care/Water

Althaea officinalis requires regular watering during the growing season. Keep the soil lightly moist but avoid waterlogging, as this can lead to root rot. During hot, dry days, water in the morning or evening to minimize evaporation.

Maintenance

Regularly remove old or dried leaves and faded flowers. Trim weak or damaged shoots to maintain a healthy plant. Light spring fertilization supports growth and encourages strong leaves and blooms.

Location

Prefers sunny locations with well-draining, humus-rich soil. Ideal for flower beds, borders, or medicinal herb gardens, providing height, structure, and decorative blooms.
