Marram grass

Ammophila arenaria, better known as marram grass, is a tough ornamental grass with upright blue-green leaves that recreate the natural beauty of coastal dunes. Exceptionally well adapted to dry, sandy soils, it is widely appreciated for stabilising slopes and enhancing gravel gardens, prairie plantings, and coastal-style landscapes. Outstanding drought tolerance and excellent winter hardiness ensure reliable year-round structure with minimal maintenance. Its architectural form makes it both practical and highly decorative.

Care/Water

Ammophila arenaria requires regular watering during the growing season, especially for newly planted specimens. Keep the soil lightly moist but avoid waterlogging. Water preferably in the morning or evening to minimize evaporation.

Maintenance

Regularly remove dead leaves and stems. Lightly trim the plant to maintain a compact, healthy form. Light spring fertilization supports growth and the development of strong stems.

Location

Prefers sunny locations with sandy, well-draining soil. Ideal for dunes, coastal gardens, or as groundcover, where it tolerates wind and sand well and provides natural structure.

Tip

Helps stabilize soil and attracts insects such as bees. Regularly check soil moisture, especially during dry summer periods, to keep the plant healthy.

Ammophylla arenaria is a decorative plant with fine, gray-green foliage, enhancing beds, borders, and group plantings. It provides structure and subtle color accents.

The plant is suitable for sunny, dry spots and attracts pollinators.
