Betterboxwood ‘Babylon Beauty’ is a unique hybrid boxwood developed by the Belgian nursery Herplant. This cultivar combines strong resistance to boxwood blight (Calonectria pseudonaviculata) with increased tolerance to boxwood caterpillars. This keeps the plant healthy and attractive, even in gardens where traditional boxwood plants often encounter problems.

What makes ‘Babylon Beauty’ special is its low, spreading growth habit and the fresh, light green color of its small, shiny leaves. These characteristics make it suitable not only for low hedges, but also as ground cover or a structural element in borders. Thanks to its strong roots, it can also tolerate less than ideal soil conditions.

This boxwood has been successfully tested and planted in the Palace Gardens of Het Loo Palace, which highlights its quality and reliability. Because ‘Babylon Beauty’ is grown in pots, it can be planted all year round.

Water and care

Babylon Beauty grows in almost all soil types, from sand to clay, as long as the soil is well-drained. Extra drainage is recommended for heavy soils (such as clay). Enrich the soil with planting soil when planting to ensure healthy root development. Young plants need extra water during the first two years in case of drought.

Fertilization

To maintain the fresh color and healthy growth, it is important to fertilize annually. Use a special BetterBuxus fertilizer with controlled release, so that the plant is provided with the right nutrients for up to 6 months. Feed in the spring (10 kg per 100 m²) and again in the fall if necessary (3 kg per 100 m²).

Pruning

The ‘Babylon Beauty’ can be pruned once or twice a year. For a neat result, prune in June/July and again in September/October if necessary. Always use sharp tools and do not prune in extreme heat (>27 °C).

Location

This cultivar grows well in sun and partial shade. It has few requirements, as long as the soil is not too wet and provides sufficient air and drainage.

Boxwood caterpillar

The ‘Babylon Beauty’ is not eaten bare by the boxwood caterpillar, as it mainly attacks young leaves. Nevertheless, it is advisable to check for pests and treat them if necessary (e.g. with Buxus Protect). The BetterBuxus guide provides notifications for this in July and October.

Tip

When planting: dig a hole twice the size of the root ball, mix 2 parts soil with 1 part planting soil, place the plant in the hole, and fill it with the same mixture. Press firmly and water generously.

Betterboxwood ‘Babylon Beauty’ is extremely versatile. Its compact and spreading growth makes it ideal for low hedges, ground cover, and neat edging in both modern and classic gardens. The fresh, light green leaves give a lively appearance that contrasts beautifully with other plants in borders or flower beds.

Babylon Beauty is also excellent for use in pots or containers, for example on terraces or balconies. Thanks to its low maintenance and strong resistance, it is a reliable choice for those looking for an elegant but robust boxwood.
