BetterBuxus® Heritage

Betterbuxus ‘Heritage’ is a strong and compact hybrid boxwood, developed by the Belgian nursery Herplant. This cultivar is distinguished by its resistance to boxwood blight (Calonectria pseudonaviculata) and its increased tolerance to box tree moths. This makes it a sustainable and future-oriented choice for gardens where traditional boxwood is often affected by diseases or pests.

With its medium to dark green, glossy leaves and compact growth habit, ‘Heritage’ closely resembles the classic Buxus sempervirens, but grows slightly denser and tighter. This makes it ideal for topiary and creating elegant hedges, borders, and geometric structures.

Although the plant is very robust, Betterbuxus ‘Heritage’ does require more fertilization than some other cultivars. Especially on poor sandy soils, it may temporarily discolor in the fall and winter, but this will recover on its own in the spring when temperatures rise.

Water and care

The ‘Heritage’ tolerates both sandy and clay soils, as long as the soil is well-drained. Water regularly during dry periods, but avoid waterlogging.

Maintenance

For a healthy, full, and green appearance, it is important to fertilize the Betterbuxus ‘Heritage’ regularly, ideally in April, mid-June, and August. A seaweed-based fertilizer is recommended because it provides the plant with all the necessary trace elements.

Pruning

Due to its compact growth, ‘Heritage’ is ideal for pruning and shaping. Prune preferably in spring and summer to maintain neat hedges and shapes.

Location

This boxwood grows well in both sun and partial shade. It has few requirements in terms of location, as long as the soil is well-drained.

Tip

Fertilize extra well when the plant is in poor sandy soil. This will preserve the dark green color and minimize discoloration in winter.
