• Fungus resistant

• Tolerant to boxwood caterpillars

• Small, shiny dark green leaves

• Slow and compact growth

• Ideal for low hedges and borders

• Less pruning required (1–2 times per year)

Betterbuxus ‘Renaissance’ is an innovative hybrid boxwood developed by the Belgian nursery Herplant. This cultivar has been specially selected to resist the dreaded boxwood blight (Calonectria pseudonaviculata) and has an increased tolerance to box tree moths. This keeps the plant healthy and green, even when traditional boxwood plants are often affected.

Renaissance has small, shiny dark green leaves and a compact, slow-growing structure. It is particularly suitable for low hedges and neat borders and requires less pruning than other varieties. One pruning in June is usually sufficient, although a second pruning in September or October can ensure an extra neat result.

Thanks to its robust characteristics and elegant appearance, ‘Renaissance’ is a valuable addition to any garden. This cultivar has been successfully tested and planted in the Palace Gardens of Het Loo Palace, which underlines its quality and durability.

Water and care

The Betterboxwood ‘Renaissance’ tolerates various soil types (sand, clay, loam, calcareous, and acidic), as long as the soil is well-drained. On heavy soils, extra drainage or soil improvement is recommended. Young plants in particular need regular watering for the first two years after planting. During drought: water young plants thoroughly three times a week; older specimens only need watering once or twice a week.

Fertilization

For healthy growth and a dark green color, it is recommended to fertilize in April, June, and August. Use an organic fertilizer or a special BetterBuxus fertilizer that is released in a controlled manner. On poor sandy soils, extra fertilization is necessary to limit discoloration in autumn and winter.

Pruning

Due to its slow growth, ‘Renaissance’ requires little pruning. One pruning in June/July is often sufficient, but for an extra neat result, a second pruning can be carried out in September/October. Preferably do not prune during extreme heat (>89 °F).

Location

The plant thrives in both sun and partial shade. Choose a location with well-drained soil and avoid wet feet.

Boxwood caterpillar

The ‘Renaissance’ is not eaten bare by the boxwood caterpillar: only young leaves may suffer slight damage. It is advisable to control the pest with targeted treatments (e.g., with Buxus Protect) in July and October.

Tip

When planting in poor or acidic soils, the use of seaweed lime and soil improver can significantly improve root development and color.

Betterboxwood ‘Renaissance’ is the perfect choice for those who want to create low, neat hedges or geometric lines in the garden. Thanks to its compact and slow-growing habit, it easily retains its shape and requires little maintenance.
This boxwood is ideal for formal gardens, but also forms a stylish structural element in modern or rural settings. It can also be planted in pots and containers, making it suitable for terraces, balconies, or patios.
