Liatris spicata Blazing Star (Gayfeather) is a native perennial with tall, dramatic flower spikes that rise above slender foliage. Suited to sun and well-drained soil, it creates a striking vertical accent and a bold, natural presence in the garden.
Its vibrant purple blooms appear in midsummer, drawing bees and butterflies and adding life to borders and slopes. Pollinator friendly and easy to place in mixed beds, it brings enduring color with minimal fuss.
Grows vigorously to a graceful height, tolerates heat, and establishes quickly in sunny spots, delivering a long season of charm as blooms unfold along the stem.
Care & Watering
Liatris spicata thrives in full sun with well-drained soil. Water deeply during establishment, then moderate watering, allowing the soil to dry between sessions.
Maintenance
Deadhead to prolong bloom, divide every 3–4 years, and remove spent stems in fall. Mulch lightly to conserve moisture and reduce weeds.
Location
Choose a sunny, sheltered spot; tall spires can topple in strong winds, so staking or planting behind a windbreak helps.
Tips
Plant in clusters for impact, use drought-tolerant mulch, and avoid overwatering to prevent root rot in humid regions.
Liatris spicata 'Lampepoetser' shines with long, purple plumes that elegantly add height and rhythm to summer arrangements.
This summer bloomer is loved for its graphic form and fits perfectly with a prairie vibe or natural borders.
Moreover, Liatris effortlessly attracts butterflies and bees, adding extra life and color to any flower bouquet or arrangement.
