Antarctic hard fern

Blechnum penna-marina is a low-growing fern with narrow, glossy green fronds that forms an excellent evergreen ground cover for shaded garden areas. Its dense growth creates a natural carpet beneath trees and shrubs or along shaded pathways. This hardy fern thrives in humus-rich, consistently moist soil and develops into a reliable, long-lived addition to woodland gardens, bringing calm texture and elegant structure.

Care/Water

Blechnum penna-marina requires regular watering during the growing season. Keep the soil moist but avoid waterlogging to prevent root rot. Morning watering protects the leaves and promotes plant health.

Maintenance

Regularly remove dead leaves to encourage fresh growth. Prune old stems to keep the plant compact and healthy. A light trim in spring helps maintain its shape.

Location

Prefers partial to full shade. Ideal for beds, natural-style gardens, or as ground cover. Well-drained soil prevents waterlogging and supports healthy roots.
