We often think that the garden is at its most beautiful in June or July. Everything is in full bloom, the greenery is fresh and lush, and summer seems endless. But August also has an incredible amount to offer in the garden. In fact, for many gardens, this is exactly the time when everything comes together beautifully.
Full Borders and Plenty of Greenery
By August, trees, shrubs and perennials have had several months to grow and develop. Borders are fuller, plants have reached their mature shape, and different colours and textures come together beautifully. A border that looked a little bare in spring may now have transformed into a lush and abundant display.
Many summer-flowering plants are also still in full bloom. Think of plants such as Perovskia, Verbena and various perennials that bring colour to the garden precisely during this period.
Every Plant Has Its Moment
Not all plants bloom at the same time, and that is exactly what makes a garden so interesting. While the first spring flowers have long since faded, other plants are reaching their peak in August.
As a result, the garden is constantly changing. Different flowers catch the eye, new colours appear and some plants attract plenty of bees and butterflies at this time of year.
Even Faded Flowers Can Be Beautiful
Not everything needs to be in perfect bloom. Faded flowers can add structure to the garden and create a more natural character. Some flower heads also remain interesting to birds and insects.
So there is no need to immediately reach for the pruning shears everywhere. A garden is allowed to look a little wild, come to life and change over time.
Enjoy the Late Summer
August is still very much summer. The garden is green, many plants are still flowering and the evenings are long enough to enjoy spending time outdoors. It may be a little less exuberant than in spring, but that is precisely what creates a calmer, more mature atmosphere.
The garden therefore does not have just one moment when it looks its best. Every season has its own charm. And August? It absolutely deserves its moment in the spotlight.
