Chinese plumbago

Ceratostigma willmottianum enriches the late summer and autumn garden with intensely gentian-blue flowers that create a striking contrast with the fresh green foliage. In autumn, the leaves develop attractive red and bronze tones, giving the plant additional seasonal interest. This compact shrub is ideal for sunny borders and attracts many bees and butterflies.

Watering and Care

Ceratostigma willmottianum grows best in well-drained soil that remains lightly moist without becoming waterlogged. During extended dry spells, additional watering helps maintain healthy growth and abundant flowering. Avoid overly wet conditions, as constantly saturated roots may reduce plant vigor.

Maintenance

Regularly removing faded flowers helps extend the display and keeps the plant looking tidy. Old stems and foliage can be cut back in early spring to encourage fresh new growth.

Location

A position in full sun or partial shade provides ideal growing conditions. Good light levels combined with suitable soil will encourage strong growth and reliable flowering.

Tip

Ceratostigma willmottianum is an excellent choice for naturalistic borders and mixed perennial plantings. Many varieties are highly attractive to bees, butterflies and other beneficial pollinators.

Ceratostigma willmottianum adds decorative accents to beds with intense blue flowers. Particularly in autumn borders, it looks colorful and lively.
