Cardoon

Cynara cardunculus impresses with large, silvery-grey, deeply divided leaves and striking violet-blue thistle flowers in summer. The architectural growth habit creates a dramatic focal point in borders and adds a Mediterranean atmosphere. Numerous bees and butterflies visit the striking flowers, making this plant an ecologically valuable addition to the garden.

Watering and Care

Cynara cardunculus grows best in well-drained soil that remains lightly moist without becoming waterlogged. During extended dry spells, additional watering helps maintain healthy growth and abundant flowering. Avoid overly wet conditions, as constantly saturated roots may reduce plant vigor.

Maintenance

Regularly removing faded flowers helps extend the display and keeps the plant looking tidy. Old stems and foliage can be cut back in early spring to encourage fresh new growth.

Location

A position in full sun or partial shade provides ideal growing conditions. Good light levels combined with suitable soil will encourage strong growth and reliable flowering.

Tip
