Deer fern

Blechnum spicant Deer Fern, also called Hard Fern or Spiked Wood Fern, is a compact, evergreen fern with delicate, arching fronds and a graceful, natural presence for any garden setting. This hardy fern thrives in shade to partial sun, prefers moist, well-drained soil, and grows to a modest height with a tidy clump. Its glossy green fronds bring texture and life to woodland borders and sheltered beds. A classic choice for naturalistic planting, Blechnum spicant adds timeless appeal to any green space, companion to ferns, hostas, and perennials.

Care and Watering

Blechnum spicant prefers evenly moist, well-drained soil, partial shade, and high humidity. Water when the surface dries, avoiding waterlogging to prevent root rot.

Maintenance

Remove dead fronds, tidy potting mix, and repot every 2-3 years. Mulch to retain moisture and reduce temperature swings.

Location

Place in bright, indirect light or dappled shade; avoid scorching sun. Indoors, keep away from dry heat vents.

Tips

Increase humidity with a tray of water and pebbles, use acidic to neutral soil, and feed lightly in spring.

Hard fern adds a refined texture to any plant arrangement with its fine, dark-green fronds. The compact, evergreen silhouette provides long-lasting contrast and depth between flowering and foliage-rich varieties. A perfect choice for fern lovers and shady accents; ideal in mixes, toppers, and as a subtle focal point.
