Dianthus caryophyllus is a classic garden carnation valued for its large, richly fragrant flowers in brilliant colours. Its elegant growth habit and exceptionally long flowering season make it a favourite for borders, cutting gardens, and patio containers. In a sunny position with well-drained soil, it produces abundant blooms that brighten the garden all summer long.
Care/Water
Dianthus caryophyllus requires regular watering, especially during flowering. Soil should be well-drained, loose, and humus-rich to prevent waterlogging and root rot. Ensure the soil stays evenly moist without water pooling on the surface.
Maintenance
Regularly remove faded flowers and dead leaves to encourage new blooms. Light pruning after flowering supports a compact shape and strong shoots. Spring fertilization strengthens growth and promotes abundant flowering.
Location
Prefers sunny locations with well-drained soil. Ideal for beds, borders, or containers. Protect the plant from strong winds and waterlogging.
Tip
Mulching helps retain soil moisture and reduce weeds. This plant attracts bees and butterflies. Check the soil regularly to maintain optimal moisture.
