Equisetum scirpoides Dwarf Horsetail is a compact, ancient-green plant with tall, upright stems and airy texture. This water-loving member of the horsetail family brings a prehistoric vibe and sturdy presence to any garden bed or pot. The plant tolerates sun to partial shade and thrives in moist soils, forming a resilient clump from a fibrous root system that stays true to its dwarf habit. Ideal for naturalistic borders and herbaceous corners, the easy-to-grow Equisetum scirpoides adds unique structure and life to your green space.

Care and Watering

Keep Equisetum scirpoides evenly moist, never waterlogged. Water when the top inch of soil dries, and use low-nutrient, acidic to neutral soil. Mist occasionally in dry indoor air.

Maintenance

Remove dead fronds and trim to maintain shape. Divide clumps every few years to prevent crowding and promote vigorous growth.

Location

Place in bright, indirect light for indoors; outdoors, a sunny to partial shade spot with consistently moist soil. Avoid hot afternoon sun in hot climates.

Tips

Mulch to retain moisture, use a well-drained pot or bed, and avoid rich fertilizer; Equisetum prefers lean feeding.

Equisetum scirpoides (dwarf horsetail) brings an architectural, graphic touch to the pond edge and bog gardens. This water and marsh plant stands out for its fine culm structures and the compact, stylized appearance that creates calm and rhythm in any green design. As a garden plant and a favorite in our top 10, it gives a modern, sculptural look to borders and water scenes.
