Hieracium pilosella, commonly known as Mouse-ear Hawkweed, forms dense carpets of silvery hairy leaf rosettes, making it an excellent natural ground cover. Bright yellow flowers appear on slender stems from May to August, attracting numerous beneficial insects. This hardy native perennial thrives in dry, nutrient-poor soils and adds a natural character to wildlife gardens, rockeries, and gravel plantings.
Care/Water
Hieracium pilosella requires moderate watering, keeping the soil well-drained and slightly moist. Overwatering should be avoided, as the plant is drought-tolerant and standing water can lead to root rot.
Maintenance
Regularly remove faded leaves and flowers to keep the plant healthy. Trim old or damaged shoots to encourage spreading and maintain even growth.
Location
Prefers sunny locations with well-drained, sandy soil. Perfect for rock gardens, dry meadows, or as ground cover, as it forms dense mats with shallow roots.
Tip
Use a thin layer of gravel or mulch to regulate soil moisture and suppress weeds. Hieracium pilosella is easy to care for, drought-tolerant, and provides a good habitat for beneficial insects in the garden.
Hieracium pilosella grows in low, dense rosettes with small flowers, ideal for ground cover or rock gardens. The foliage keeps the plant healthy and supports the delicate blooms.
