Rodgersia aesculifolia Horse Chestnut‑Leaved Rodgersia is a striking herbaceous perennial with large palmately divided leaves that echo a horse chestnut. Its impressive foliage and bold habit create natural drama in shaded spots, and its hardy perennial character keeps it coming back year after year.
In late summer it blooms with airy clusters, adding texture to borders. It reaches a substantial size and prefers rich, moist soil with partial shade. This is an easy-to-grow choice for woodland and shade gardens.
Pair with ferns and hostas for a lush, natural look, turning any corner into a welcoming garden focal point without shouting for attention.
Care and Watering
Rodgersia aesculifolia thrives in evenly moist, rich soil; water regularly, especially in dry spells, and keep soil consistently damp but not soggy.
Maintenance
Avoid heavy pruning; remove dead leaves in late winter and divide clumps every 3–4 years to maintain vigor and size.
Location
Plant in part shade with afternoon sun protection; mulch to conserve moisture and prevent crown rot.
Tips
Feed with balanced plant food in spring; provide good drainage, and stake tall foliage if winds threaten.
Horse-chestnut Rodgersia aesculifolia Schout-bij-nacht is an eye-catcher in borders and wet gardens thanks to its large, palmate leaves and warm autumn tones. These eye-catching leaves form a beautiful contrast with ornamental grasses and perennials, and give structure to flower-filled displays.
In spring, graceful panicles reward insects: a true spring bloomer that attracts butterflies and bees and enriches biodiversity.
