  • Perfect for prairie and border planting.
Salvia microphylla ‘Hot Lips’ Hot Lips Sage brings bright, tubular flowers and a compact, sturdy form to your garden. This vibrant red-and-pink bloom and the fragrant foliage create a lively, inviting presence in sunny beds and borders. A sunny spot with well-drained soil is ideal for this pollinator-friendly shrub, where nectar-rich blossoms enchant bees and butterflies and keep color going through the season. With a tidy habit and reliable vigor, it grows as a hardy, drought-tolerant shrub that delivers enduring color year after year.

Care and Watering

Water when the top inch of soil dries; ensure well-drained soil and full sun. Avoid overwatering to prevent root rot, and mulch lightly to retain moisture without soggy roots.

Maintenance

Cut back after spring bloom to encourage a second flush; remove spent flowers and any deadwood. Protect in frost-prone areas and tidy the plant in late winter.

Location and Growing Conditions

Plant in full sun with good air flow; Salvia microphylla ‘Hot Lips’ tolerates heat and drought once established. Hardy to zones 8–11; in cooler regions, grow in pots and overwinter indoors.

Tips

Pinch early for a fuller shape, feed with a balanced fertilizer in spring, and deadhead to prolong flowering. Provide support if grown tall and monitor for pests.

Sage 'Hot Lips' Salvia is a striking garden gem with bi-colour flowers that elegantly combine red and white. Ideal for borders and prairie-like plantings where color and shape speak. The long-blooming habit provides flowers from summer to autumn, continually visible, and attracts butterflies and bees for a lively, natural look.
