  • Sorghastrum nutans Indiangrass is drought-tolerant and low-maintenance.
  • Vertical accent for borders, beds and prairie-style gardens.
  • Year-round structure with graceful seed heads in autumn.
  • Hardy perennial suited to the Dutch climate and containers.
  • Low-fuss care with minimal pruning and tidy appearance.
Sorghastrum nutans Indiangrass is a tall native grass prized for its graceful, airy plumes and robust habit that adds structure to any landscape. Its late-season golden seed heads glow in the sun and support local wildlife, while durable blades give texture and movement through the seasons. Ideal for naturalistic beds, prairie-inspired borders, and larger plots, it offers dependable vigor and a distinctly open, wild look.

Care and Watering

Indiangrass thrives in full sun with well-drained soil. Water deeply to establish, then it tolerates drought and requires only light irrigation during prolonged dry periods.

Maintenance

Cut back in late winter or early spring, remove dead foliage, and divide crowded clumps every 3–5 years to maintain vigor.

Location and Tips

Plant in a sunny, sheltered site in USDA zones 4–9. Use mulch to retain moisture; pair with native wildflowers, avoid heavy fertilizer, and enjoy its sturdy, ornamental form.

Sorghastrum nutans, also known as Indiangrass, is a striking ornamental grass that adds color and structure to any border. The golden plumes and elegant columns form a dynamic contrast with sturdy garden plants and other deciduous ornamental grasses. This decorative cultivar creates movement and depth and works well as a focal point in summer and autumn compositions.
