Bearded iris 'Indian Chief'

Iris germanica 'Indian Chief' creates a striking display with its velvety red-brown to mahogany-coloured flowers. The unusual flower colour contrasts beautifully with the grey-green foliage, adding warmth and sophistication to the late spring garden. This vigorous bearded iris thrives in sunny borders and combines especially well with yellow or blue flowering perennials.

Care/Water

The Iris 'Indian Chief' requires consistent watering throughout the growing season. Water regularly, especially during hot and dry summer months. The soil should be well-drained to allow excess water to escape and keep roots healthy. Avoid standing water to prevent root rot.

Maintenance

Remove faded flowers regularly to maintain plant vitality. Trim damaged or yellowing leaves to keep the plant compact. Light pruning after flowering encourages strong shoots and abundant blooms the following year.

Location

This Iris prefers a sunny location with good air circulation. An open, bright spot promotes plant health and reduces disease risk. Partial shade is possible but may reduce flowering.

Tip

Loosen the soil around the plant regularly to improve water and oxygen access to the roots. A thin mulch layer helps retain moisture and makes maintenance easier.

Iris germanica 'Indian Chief' offers strong green foliage with striking flowers that give borders an intense accent. The foliage supports the blooms and keeps the plant healthy and attractive.
