Dwarf iris

Iris pumila is a compact dwarf bearded iris that delights with large flowers in early spring. Depending on the variety, blooms appear in shades of blue, violet, yellow, or white, bringing vibrant colour to the garden at the start of the season. The narrow grey-green foliage remains decorative after flowering and forms dense clumps. This hardy perennial is ideal for rock gardens, sunny borders, and low edging.

Care/Water

The Iris pumila requires regular watering during the growing season, especially on hot days. The soil should always be slightly moist but well-drained to avoid waterlogging. Water directly at the roots and avoid wetting the foliage to prevent fungal infections. Consistent moisture supports flowering and strong leaf growth.

Maintenance

Regularly remove faded flowers to allow the plant to focus energy on new buds. Trim old or damaged leaves as they die back. Use organic fertilizer in spring to promote growth. Check the plant regularly for pests or diseases.

Location

This Iris thrives in a sunny location with good air circulation. Partial shade is possible but may reduce flowering. Ensure the soil is well-drained. An open spot promotes vigorous shoots and protects the leaves from shading.

Tip

A helpful tip is to apply a thin mulch layer after flowering to retain moisture and nutrients. This keeps the plant healthy and vital. Regular checks make maintenance easier.

Iris pumila offers compact fresh green foliage with flowers that give rock gardens and borders a small but striking accent. The foliage supports the blooms and keeps the plant healthy and attractive.
