Dwarf iris 'Altroviolacea'

Iris pumila 'Altroviolacea' brings rich violet-blue flowers that create bold spring colour in the garden. This early-flowering dwarf bearded iris has a compact habit and forms dense clumps of decorative sword-shaped foliage. Its large flowers appear from April onwards, creating eye-catching displays in sunny borders and rock gardens. Thanks to its excellent hardiness, it remains an attractive garden perennial for many years.

Care/Water

The Iris pumila 'Altroviolacea' requires regular watering during the growing season, especially in hot weather. The soil should always be slightly moist, well-drained, and nutrient-rich to support healthy growth and strong blooms. Water directly at the roots and avoid wetting the foliage to prevent fungal problems. Consistent moisture supports leaf development and strong shoots.

Maintenance

Regularly remove faded flowers to encourage new buds. Trim old or damaged leaves after flowering. Use organic fertilizer in spring to support growth and flowering. Check the plant regularly for pests or diseased leaves.

Location

This Iris thrives in a sunny location with good air circulation. Partial shade is possible but may reduce flowering. Ensure the soil is well-drained. An open spot promotes vigorous shoots and healthy foliage.

Tip

A helpful tip is to apply a thin mulch layer around the plant after flowering to retain moisture and nutrients. This supports the plant long-term and makes maintenance much easier. Regular checks for pests or diseases are recommended.

Iris pumila 'Altroviolacea' combines fresh green foliage with flowers that give rock gardens and borders an intense purple accent. The foliage supports the blooms and keeps the plant healthy and graceful.
