Dwarf iris 'White Gem'

Iris pumila 'White Gem' brightens the early spring garden with its large, brilliant white flowers that create eye-catching displays. This low-growing dwarf bearded iris forms compact clumps of narrow, decorative foliage, making it an excellent choice for rock gardens and sunny borders. The hardy variety is admired for its pure flower colour and neat growth habit, while the attractive foliage remains ornamental after flowering.

Care/Water

The Iris pumila 'White Gem' requires regular watering during the growing season, especially in warm or dry weather. The soil should always be slightly moist, well-drained, and nutrient-rich to support strong shoots, healthy foliage, and abundant blooms. Water directly at the roots and avoid wetting the foliage to prevent fungal problems. Consistent moisture supports the plant’s vitality and flower development.

Maintenance

Regularly remove faded flowers to allow the plant to focus energy on new buds. Trim old or damaged leaves after flowering to promote healthy growth. Use organic fertilizer in spring to support flowering and overall development. Check the plant regularly for pests or diseased leaves.

Location

This Iris thrives in a sunny location with good air circulation. Partial shade is possible but may reduce flowering. Ensure the soil is well-drained to prevent root rot. An open spot supports vigorous shoots and healthy foliage.

Tip

A helpful tip is to apply a thin mulch layer around the plant after flowering to retain moisture and nutrients. This keeps the plant vital and ready for the next flowering period. Regular checks make maintenance much easier.
