Pontederia lanceolata Lanceleaf Pickerelweed is a hardy aquatic plant suited to ponds and wetland borders. It forms lush clumps with glossy, lance-shaped leaves and vibrant blue-violet flowers. A robust water plant that anchors natural shoreline habitats.
In warm months, it grows steadily along the water’s edge, offering a fresh green backdrop and seasonal blooms. Its compact root system helps it settle into mixed beds and naturalize with other aquatic species. This is an easy to grow choice for water gardens.
With its resilience and versatility, Pontederia lanceolata provides a classic aquatic look that supports pond ecosystems and adds movement to the landscape. It’s a native habitat favorite for natural ponds and streams.
Care and Watering
Pontederia lanceolata thrives in bright, indirect sun with evenly moist soil. In ponds or wet beds keep the roots submerged 2-5 cm, water when the top inch dries, and avoid droughts.
Location
Plant near edges or in shallow water zones; enjoys full sun to partial shade for best flowering and growth.
Maintenance
Remove dead leaves, divide every 2-3 years to maintain vigor, and fertilize lightly in the growing season with a balanced aquatic fertilizer.
Tips
Mulch lightly to retain moisture, protect from frost in cold climates, and refresh the planting in spring.
Pontederia lanceolata, the giant pickerelweed, adds a striking accent to any pond edge or water feature. With its intense purple flowers and tall, upright blooms, it creates an elegant, natural atmosphere.
As a versatile wetland plant and popular among garden plant enthusiasts, this specimen enhances biodiversity and visual appeal.
