Plume poppy

Macleaya cordata impresses with its large blue-green foliage and airy creamy white flower plumes that float high above the leaves in summer. This impressive perennial reaches a substantial height, making it an excellent structural plant for the back of perennial borders. Its bold architectural habit adds drama to naturalistic plantings and remains attractive well into autumn.

Care/Water

Macleaya cordata requires regular watering during the growing season, especially in hot and dry weather. The soil should be moist, well-drained, and nutrient-rich to support strong flowers and healthy foliage. Water at the base and avoid wetting the leaves to prevent fungal diseases. Consistent moisture promotes healthy plants and lush flowering.

Maintenance

Regularly remove faded flowers to stimulate new blooms. Cut back old or damaged shoots to encourage fresh growth. Organic fertilizer supports strong flowers and healthy foliage. Check the plant regularly for pests.

Location

Macleaya cordata prefers sunny to partially shaded locations with moist, well-drained soil. Avoid waterlogging to prevent root damage. Open spots promote strong plants and long flowering periods.

Tip

Mulch around the base helps retain moisture and keep roots cool. This supports strong plants and extends flowering time.

Macleaya cordata features striking leaves and flower spikes, prominently accenting beds and borders. The decorative foliage supports the flowers and contributes to plant vitality.
