Ammophila arenaria Marram Grass (European Beachgrass) is a resilient coastal plant, prized for its salt-tolerant leaves and sturdy rhizomes. This hardy grass thrives in windy, sandy soils and forms a compact clump that stabilizes dunes. With a vigorous growth habit and a deep, spreading root system, it helps bind sand and provides erosion control. It prefers sunny locations and well-drained sand, adapting to coastal climates with ease. Ideal for eco-conscious gardeners seeking natural shoreline protection and habitat support. Discover how this classic European beachgrass enhances beach ecosystems while enriching your plant collection.

Watering

Water sparingly once established; Marram grass prefers a dry, sandy mix and drains quickly. Avoid waterlogging and overwatering.

Maintenance

Trim dead leaves in early spring and tidy clumps; check for disease and divide every few years to maintain vigor.

Location

Choose full sun on sandy, well-drained soil. It tolerates salt spray and strong winds.

Tips

Mulch lightly, avoid heavy feeding, and protect roots from frost; plant on the windward edge of dunes for best results.

Marram grass (Ammophila arenaria) brings a natural, coastal atmosphere with undulating culms and fine texture. It provides playful movement and subtle color contrasts, ideal as an accent in borders or rock gardens. As ornamental grasses and garden plants, this specimen often ranks in the top 10 of favorite evergreen ornamental grasses, loved for its sculptural appearance and calming effect.
