Purple moor grass

Mitchella repens forms a dense evergreen carpet of small, glossy leaves, making it an excellent ground cover for shaded gardens. Delicate white flowers appear in spring and are followed by bright red ornamental berries that often remain on the plant throughout winter. This hardy woodland perennial provides year-round structure and natural charm along woodland edges and in shaded gardens.

Care/Water

Mitchella repens requires regular watering, especially during dry periods. The soil should remain evenly moist, humus-rich, and well-drained to promote healthy, dense foliage and strong shoots. Adequate watering supports the growth of this creeping, evergreen plant and its decorative white flowers.

Maintenance

Regularly remove wilted leaves and flowers to keep the plant vigorous. Prune lightly if needed to control shape and encourage dense growth. Organic fertilization in spring supports healthy shoots and abundant foliage.

Location

Mitchella repens prefers partially shaded to shaded locations with moist, well-drained soil. Avoid waterlogged areas to prevent root rot. A cool site protects the leaves and promotes even growth.

Tip

This plant is perfect as groundcover under trees or shrubs. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and reduce weeds, and enjoy the charming white flowers in early summer.
