Ophiopogon japonicus Mondo Grass is a graceful evergreen perennial with slender, arching leaves forming a neat dark-green clump. This evergreen plant adds texture and structure to borders, paths, and shaded areas. Its clump-forming habit stays tidy year round, thriving in a variety of soils and conditions. A reliable choice for naturalistic plantings. Ideal for gardens seeking subtle elegance, this hardy option combines durability with refined beauty, and its disease resistant foliage stays vibrant in many climates.

Care and Watering

Keep Ophiopogon japonicus evenly moist but well-drained. Water when the top inch of soil dries, avoid soggy feet, and mulch to conserve moisture. Use a balanced mix to prevent soggy roots.

Maintenance

Remove dead leaves, divide every 3–4 years, and lightly fertilize in spring with a balanced fertilizer.

Location and Tips

Plant in partial shade to morning sun with well-drained soil. It tolerates drought once established and looks great as edging or groundcover. Tip: avoid compacted soil and crowded planting.

The mondo grass (Ophiopogon japonicus) adds a refined, grassy elegance to borders and plantings. The fine, glossy foliage creates a calm leaf texture that contrasts excellently with coarse shapes and flowers. With subtle flower clusters and dark berries, this plant offers a durable seasonal accent and a timeless evergreen appearance. Perfect as a stylish accent in mixed plantings.
