Planting Instructions for Bare-Root Hedge Plants

When planting bare-root hedge plants, careful attention is essential. Follow the instructions below from Garden Plants for Sale to ensure your hedge grows healthy and develops optimally.

Step 1: Choose the right planting time
Bare-root hedge plants are best planted while dormant, typically between early November and late March. Planting during this period promotes strong root development and a successful start in spring.

Step 2: Preparation and transport
Prevent the roots from drying out or freezing by planting immediately after purchase. If immediate planting is not possible, temporarily place the plants in a trench to keep the roots covered. During transport, always keep the roots protected and moist.

Step 3: Select the appropriate location
When choosing the planting site, consider the distance from property boundaries. A minimum distance of 50 centimeters is recommended to provide adequate space for growth.

Step 4: Digging the planting trench
Create a trench approximately 40 centimeters deep and 40 centimeters wide. Loosen the soil and, if necessary, enrich it with compost or other organic materials to encourage root growth.

Step 5: Planting the hedge
For a dense hedge, we recommend four plants per meter. Place the plants at the same depth as in the nursery, with the top of the first roots about five centimeters above ground level. Firmly press the soil around the roots and water the hedge immediately. During dry periods or in spring when leaves start to emerge, additional watering is important.

Step 6: Hedge maintenance
Prune the sides of the hedge annually to encourage full growth. Once the hedge reaches the desired height, you can also trim the top. Annual pruning of both sides and the top ensures a compact and healthy hedge.

By following these steps, you will achieve a lush hedge that provides privacy and adds aesthetic value to your garden. Regular watering and proper maintenance are essential for the best results.
