Rodgersia pinnata Pinnate Rodgersia (Rodgersia) is a striking perennial with bold, deeply veined pinnate leaves and sturdy stems. Native to Asia, it forms a robust clump with dramatic foliage from spring through autumn, bringing height and presence to the garden.
In spring to summer, airy flower plumes rise above the foliage, delivering vertical interest and a soft contrast to the broad leaves. The plant combines texture and form to create a natural focal point.
Hardy and adaptable, it thrives in moist, well-drained soil and partial shade, making it a versatile addition to woodland borders and shaded beds. Bold foliage and vertical flower plumes stand out as its core strengths.
Care and Watering
Rodgersia pinnata prefers moist, well-drained soil with steady watering. Water deeply in dry spells and mulch to retain moisture; avoid waterlogged crowns.
Maintenance
Cut back dead leaves in spring, divide every 3–4 years and feed lightly with a balanced slow-release fertilizer.
Location
Plant in partial shade to dappled sun with protection from harsh afternoon sun and strong winds.
Tips
Pair with shade-loving perennials, mulch well, and keep soil slightly acidic to neutral for best growth.
Rodgersia pinnata 'Schout-bij-nacht' gives the garden a decorative impulse with its imposing leaves and deep color contrasts. The plant forms a striking feature in borders thanks to its rich leaf texture and spectacular flowers that bring color in both spring and summer.
An attractive choice for lovers of perennials and for those who want to welcome butterflies and bees.
