Sorbus aucuparia Rowan (European Mountain-Ash) is a native temperate tree prized for its rugged charm and resilience. It thrives in a range of soils and climates, offering a robust presence in any garden. In spring it bears delicate clusters of pale blossoms, followed by bright berries that glow in autumn. This species supports local wildlife and adds seasonal interest with its enduring form. With a moderate to upright growth habit, it fits small to medium spaces and is loved for its long-lived, hardy nature and adaptable character.

Care and Watering

Sorbus aucuparia thrives in full sun and well-drained soil. Water deeply during establishment, then provide moderate watering, especially in dry spells. Avoid waterlogged spots to prevent root rot.

Maintenance

Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape and remove any dead wood. Mulch to conserve moisture and feed sparingly with a balanced fertilizer in spring.

Location

Choose a sunny spot with space for its wide crown; it tolerates urban pollution and compact soils but dislikes heavy clay or soggy ground. Plant away from foundations.

Tips

Plant with pollinator-friendly companions, protect young trees from wind, mulch yearly, and monitor for aphids or caterpillars.

Sorbus aucuparia (rowan) gives your garden a graceful touch with striking clusters of red-orange berries and elegant, swaying leaves. In spring it blooms with soft white flowers; in autumn it shows rich autumn color and texture for every season. An ideal choice as a decorative tree for natural, colorful accents.
