Scaly Male Fern

Dryopteris affinis Scaly Male Fern is a robust, shade-loving fern with arching fronds and scaly brown stalks. Its presence adds a natural, forest-like touch to any garden space. This species forms a neat clump and thrives in cool, moist conditions, preferring rich, well-drained soil and partial sun. The fronds remain attractive year-round, offering texture and depth. Ideal for woodland borders or container plantings, it brings lasting greenery and a calm, timeless presence to outdoor spaces.

Care and Watering

Dryopteris affinis thrives in partial shade, rich, humus‑rich soil, and regular moisture. Water evenly to keep the soil damp but not soggy; reduce watering in winter and avoid letting the roots dry out.

Maintenance

Remove dead fronds at the base to encourage new growth, and divide every 3–4 years to maintain vigor. Mulch lightly to conserve moisture and deter weeds.

Location

Place in a sheltered, humid spot with indirect light. Avoid strong sun that scorches fronds; indoor setups benefit from a pebble tray or room humidifier.

Tips

Use well‑draining, acidic to neutral soil; mist occasionally; feed sparingly in growing season with a balanced fertilizer.
