Armeria maritima ‘Alba’ Sea Thrift (Thrift, Sea Pink) is a charming, compact evergreen perennial with neat tufts and delicate white blooms that brighten borders all season. Its sun-loving habit makes it a standout in coastal and rock garden settings.
This hardy plant forms low, grassy clumps that fit neatly along paths and in gravelly beds. It thrives in well-drained soils and salt-kissed air, bringing a fresh, natural look to sunny garden spaces with graceful, airy stems.
In spring and summer, clusters of pale blossoms rise above the evergreen clump, creating a light, coastal feel. A resilient, low-maintenance choice for adding texture and brightness to a variety of garden styles.
Care and Watering
Armeria maritima ‘Alba’ thrives in sunny, well-drained soil. Water sparingly, allow the topsoil to dry between drinks, and avoid winter wetness. In containers, water when the top inch dries and feed lightly in spring.
Location and Sun
Plant in full sun for best blooms; it tolerates coastal winds. Use gritty, sandy soil or add perlite for drainage, and mulch lightly to keep moisture even and weed-free.
Maintenance and Tips
Deadhead after flowering to extend bloom, prune lightly for a neat shape, and avoid heavy fertilizer. It’s drought-tolerant; divide clumps every 3–4 years to maintain vigor.
The ornamental value of Armeria maritima ‘Alba’ (sea thrift) lies in its compact, globe-shaped flowering: white flower cushions that gently ripple in spring and summer. They create fresh, graphic accents and form beautiful contrasts with foliage plants and ornamental grasses. In addition, this species attracts butterflies and bees, particularly decorative in rock and wall gardens and natural borders.
