  • Low-maintenance clump-forming perennial ideal for borders and meadows.
  • Seasonal color with vivid foliage and texture in every season.
Panicum virgatum ‘Rotstrahlbusch’ Switchgrass is a native North American perennial grass with an upright, graceful silhouette and vibrant seasonal color. Its bold presence makes it a standout in any garden bed, delivering texture and structure year after year. This cultivar grows to a substantial height with compact branching and striking red-tinted plumes that light up the landscape in late summer and fall. It looks good in mixed borders and naturalized areas, adapting to a range of soils and sunny spots. Perfect for a naturalistic garden, it provides movement and rhythm as the plumes catch the breeze. A versatile choice for creating seasonal interest and a robust, wildlife-friendly presence.

Care & Water

Switchgrass Rotstrahlbusch thrives in full sun and well-drained soil. Water regularly until established; once rooted, it is drought-tolerant but appreciates deep, occasional watering and never waterlogged soil.

Maintenance

Cut back hard in late winter to encourage new shoots; divide every 3–4 years if clumps become crowded; remove dead foliage to keep the plant tidy and healthy.

Location

Choose a sunny spot with good drainage and space about 1.5 m apart. It tolerates average garden soil and adapts to slightly acidic to neutral pH.

Tips

Use as a screen or windbreak; leave seed heads for winter structure; mulch lightly to conserve moisture and control weeds; avoid invasive rhizome spread with moderate containment.

Panicum virgatum ‘Rotstrahlbusch’ switchgrass adds with its elegant stems and airy open panicle a playful accent to borders and contemporary planting. This ornamental grass is known for its fine texture and generous volume. The warm tones and striking autumn color provide visible depth and softly movable lines that enhance style and atmosphere. Perfect for color contrasts and dynamic compositions thanks to the characteristic switchgrass.
