  • Produces abundant clusters of fragrant white flowers throughout the summer months.
  • Fully hardy and robust, making it well suited to temperate European gardens.
  • Natural climbing habit, ideal for fences, pergolas, trellises and garden screens.
  • Low maintenance and highly attractive to bees, butterflies and other pollinators.
Clematis vitalba Old Man's Beard, also called Traveller's-Joy, is a graceful climber with airy blooms and wiry stems that bring life to any space. It grows well in sun to partial shade, teaming up with walls, fences, or supports to create a living feature across the season. A hardy, long-flowering plant ideal for naturalistic planting schemes and large garden landscapes, it expands with vigor and pairs with other garden natives.

Care and watering

Clematis vitalba thrives in well-drained soil; water deeply during dry spells and mulch to retain moisture. Support its climbing habit and prune lightly after flowering to keep form.

Maintenance

Remove dead wood in late winter, feed with a balanced fertilizer in spring, and check for aphids. Train new shoots along a trellis or fence.

Location and tips

Plant in sun to light shade with cool roots, provide sturdy support, and avoid waterlogged spots. Layer mulch and prune responsibly to encourage long, fragrant growth.

Clematis vitalba (Traveller's Joy) provides a natural, charming appearance with an abundance of rich white flowers and graceful vines that bring lightness to the greenery. Her delicate blossoms and later fluffy seed heads create a romantic, airy accent and plenty of texture, and pair beautifully with colorful perennials for a season-long experience.
