Care and Watering

Equisetum fluviatile thrives in constantly moist, boggy soil or shallow standing water. Keep soil damp, not waterlogged; avoid drying between waterings. Avoid heavy fertilizers; prune dead fronds to encourage fresh growth.

Maintenance

Maintain with occasional debris removal, monitor for pests, and divide crowded plants every few years in container settings. Refresh potting mix every season and ensure good drainage in non-wet areas.

Location and Tips

Plant near ponds, streams, or damp borders in full sun to partial shade; tolerates shallow flooding. Propagate by rhizome cuttings, add gravel for stability, and protect in hard winters for best longevity.

Equisetum fluviatile (water horsetail) gives every garden a clean, graphic accent with slender, cylindrical stems and a striking vertical presence. This water- and marsh-plant works particularly well as an architectural element in planting compositions. The vibrant, bright green color forms a fresh contrast with reeds or ornamental grasses and enhances the serene atmosphere of pond and marsh zones.
